St. Peter’s College – Basketball
History
A basketball court at St. Peter’s College was first constructed in the playground in 1955 and the sport commenced with Sam Chandrasena appointed captain. The court was later moved to behind the pavilion where currently the swimming pool stands and with the generous assistance of an Old Boy, Mr. Joe Roche, Head of Maurice Roche & Co, agents for Philips electrical products, the Peterite basketball court was floodlit in the 1960s. However, in the year 1992, with the extension of the Duplication Road due, the basketball court was moved to its present location and opened by Rev. Fr. Joe Wickramasinghe.
General Overview
The intention of establishing the famous sport – Basketball and the mandatory Basketball court in the premises of St. Peter’s college was to create awareness and learn the necessary life skills. The school’s basketball team was also built to provide an opportunity for neighboring schools to compete with the skills that were taught to the Peterite basketball team and give them the opportunity to learn as well.
