St. Peter’s College – Cricket
History
Cricket at St. Peter’s began in the year 1927 with Norman Paternott as captain but matches were limited to a few friendly games. However in 1932 the first official cricket match was played against St. Benedict’s under George Jayaweera who was appointed captain in 1931. In the year 1933 with St. Peter’s College challenging St. Joseph’s College for a game of Cricket, the Big Match series (Joe-Pete) began. This first match was played at the Peterite grounds on the insistence of Fr. Le Goc, Rector of St. Joseph’s College.
With experience gained and a stoppage of cricket for two years due to World War II, the Peterites scored two successive victories in 1946 and 1947. Dion Walles was the successful Peterite captain in both years.
Peterite, Clive Inman holds the record for the highest score in the Big Match series when as captain he scored 204 ret. in 1954.
